Berlin resident Frank Schültge Blumm, who composes adventurous, intricate music using a variety of acoustic and electronic instruments, describes himself as an "ear worker." Born in Bremen on July 16, 1968, Blumm studied music art, educational science, and classical guitar. His early projects focused on noise (Blumm's way of rebelling against the classical guitar), but his work became more structured once he became interested in radio plays. A move to Berlin in 1997 found Blumm collaborating more, most notably with Harald "Sack" Ziegler for the Sack & Blumm project, and his radio plays were broadcast across Germany. Having already released records on the Staubgold, Gefriem, and Audio Dregs labels, Blumm came to most people's attention in 2001 when he released Mondkuchen, one of the first "acoustic" records on Morr Music, which had generally released electronic music up to that point. In 2002, Staubgold released his dreamy Ankern album, but he returned to Morr for 2005's Zweite Meer and 2006's Summer Kling (Audio Dregs also issued Lichten in 2005). Up Up and Astray Numerous collaborations followed, including a 2007 release with trumpeter Luca Fadda, singles with Anne Laplantine and David Grubbs, and an album with vocalist Jana Plewa under the name Old Splendifolia. Additionally, Blumm and Ellinor Blixt (aka Bobby Baby) released two albums as Bobby & Blumm, and Blumm joined Fadda and Jason Candler in the reggae-inspired Quasi Dub Development project. Blumm also began releasing a series of experimental albums with famed German pianist Nils Frahm. The solo full-length Up Up and Astray appeared on Pingipung in 2013; the label also issued Blumm's subsequent collaborations with Springintgut (The Bird and White Noise) and Hey (Riddims and Biscuits). Welcome, an album of laid-back, intimate electro-acoustic indie pop, was released by Karaoke Kalk in 2017.
Sakaya Botanic (1/2 of group A)
Japanese avant-garde synth wave duo group A was formed in 2012 by Tommi Tokyo (synthesizers, vocals, percussion) and Sayaka Botanic (violin, cassette tapes). Their early shows came as a shock to most spectators, non-stop waves of experimental noise, intensely emotional poetry readings and nude live-paintings. While their mixture of synth heavy minimal wave, avant noise, striking visuals and performance art still carries the very breath of early industrial pioneers such as Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire, group A has since evolved into a beast of its own. The duo have recently been sharing bills with artists such as Acid Mother Temple, Merzbow, Nisennenmondai, Phew, and Melt Banana and headlined the Urban Nomad Film Festival in Taiwan, and the Art Book Fair in Tokyo. In 2016 the duo moved their base to Berlin where they further developed their musical and visual material, performing at the CTM Festival and GEGEN. The band has recently been featured in The WIRE Magazine and toured several major festivals including Clandestino, Kalabalik, Berlin Atonal, Steirischer Herbst, UH Fest, PHONO Festival, Avant Art Festival and Saint Ghetto Festival in Switzerland.
Midori Hirano (aka MimiCof)
Hirano is a Japanese musician, composer and producer, born in Kyoto/Japan and now living in Berlin since 2008. She started learning the piano as a child, and this triggered what was to later see her study classical piano at university. Therefore her productions are based on the use of acoustic instruments such as the piano, strings or guitars, but yet experimental and an eclectic mixture of modern digital sounds with subtle electronic processing and field recordings. She has released two albums on noble label. Her second, “klo:yuri”(2008), saw her further develop her sound, garnering critical acclaim from various media including TIME magazine , BBC radio and FACT Magazine. Over the following years Midori has performed live throughout Europe and Japan. Besides producing her own works, she has composed music for films, video installations and dance performances. The films that have commissioned works by Midori have been screened at Berlin International Film Festival, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Krakow Film Festival and HongKong International Film Festival, among others. Her third album “Minor Planet” is released on sonic pieces in September 2016.
Jeremy Young (mem of Sontag Shogun)
Young is an American sonic artist and composer living in Montreal, who has released work and performed throughout Europe, Asia, the US, UK and Canada. His creative work includes instrumental and electroacoustic composition for recording and live performance, reel-to-reel tape collage, sound-poetry and audio-visual scoring. His main interests as an artist lie in the analog treatment of surface-based audio (piezo “contact” mic'd objects and surfaces, manipulating tape and tone via texture and voltage) and purveying the notion that both the audio signal and the medium on which it is recorded, edited and played back, should equally contribute to the creation of a sonic narrative, an underlying principle of musique concrète. In 2018, Young begins work on a major acousmatic project on "sonic mimicry", using foley processes to artificially recreate field recordings of actual sonic environments, which involves collaborations with artists, Francisco López, Michael Pisaro, Christina Kubisch, Janek Schaefer, Kate Carr, Lawrence English, BJ Nilsen and Margaret Noble. Also later this year, his work, Filaments: Wave Sketches for Eliane Radique, will be issued by Moving Furniture Records in tribute to the work of French composer, Eliane Radique. In 2016, he was commissioned by the Musée d'ethnographie de Genève to compose a new full-length work of sound based on their historic ethnomusicological sound archives. The resulting work, The Poetics of Time-Space, was issued on CD by the museum and the Belgian imprint, Silken Tofu. In 2014, he was awarded a Media Artists' Assistance Grant by Wave Farm (NYSCA) to create 125 unique artist edition double-sided tape loop pieces towards developing a new model for audience engagement with the sonic arts, housing all the loops online in a freely streamable living archive and commissioning over 120 sound artists to create new work using each singular piece. Jesse Perlstein (mem of Sontag Shogun)
Perlstein is a multi-disciplinary artist born and based out of New York City. He has spent the last decade creating cross-genre works that often blend the mediums of sound, visual art, prose & room installations, focusing on the confluence between fantasy and reality and exploring their inseparable tangle. This ‘tangle’ is best expressed when centered on the idea of memory, an act of fictionalization. After a moment passes it ceases to exist and resurrection can only be done through imagination—the basic tenant of original, unaided fabrication. This illusory reconstructed moment is born of manipulation and contrivance albeit subconscious, which begs the question: how constructed is the past? The surrealism of nostalgia and memory is prominently explored in Jesse’s audio work. He is a self-professed collector of moments, or an etcher of the shadows left as they pass. Through the practice of field recording he captures and repurposes temporal ambience for compositions that include vocal accompaniment and sonic manipulation, creating surreal auditory soundscapes. These sonic tapestries are designed to be immersive and nostalgic and have been featured and composed for film, room installations, dances, performance, and in his recorded music spanning over several different projects and collaborations. Most recently, Jesse has been studying the way in which sound can be planted in rooms or spaces, composing pieces that are meant for a specific time and place, providing specific context and a method of physical immersion for the listener/audience.
Sleepland is the solo project of Kengo Yonemura residing in Hyogo, Japan. He has run this project since 2011 to pursue and create the sound between human consciousness and subconsciousness by guitars, synthesizers, field recordings, and some materials. His latest album is “for Silentseeing” from White Paddy Mountain which is the label established by Chihei Hatakeyama, and a song “merits of sequence” included this album was used in a fabric movie of Hosoo, a Kyoto-based textile company founded in 1688. https://sleepland.bandcamp.com/ http://soundcloud.com/sleepland
